Dec. 14--MIAMI GARDENS -- The Dolphins received a huge break before today's game against the San Francisco 49ers even started when Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore was ruled out with a sprained ankle.
Gore is fifth in the NFL in yards-from-scrimmage with 1,345 yards, including 978 yards rushing and eight touchdowns. The former University of Miami standout has averaged 4.96 yards per touch, which ranks third among running backs.
Gore will be replaced in the starting lineup by former Panthers running back DeShaun Foster, who has only 37 carries this season and just 78 yards or 2.1 yards-per-carry.
The 49ers signed running back Thomas Clayton off their practice squad for depth.
Dolphins INACTIVES
For the first time this season backup linebacker Quentin Moses was one of the Dolphins' seven inactives Sunday.
Cornerback Joey Thomas was activated for the fourth team this season. Other inactives include former 49ers receiver Chris Hannon, fullback Casey Cramer, rookie guard Shawn Murphy, tackle Nate Garner and defensive end Rod Wright.
Tight end Joey Haynos was activated for the first time in six games. John Beck is the emergency quarterback.
