It was always a struggle to find safe parks to play in during Vernon Carey's childhood, so when The Home Depot approached the Miami native about building a playground at Little River Park in his honor, the Dolphins starting lineman couldn't have been more thrilled.
During Tuesday's daylong construction, Carey, his wife, LaTavia, his three children and 10 students from his mentorship program at Brownsville Middle helped volunteers from The Home Depot and a nonprofit organization named KaBOOM! erect the playground, which features Dolphins colors and the team's logo.
It was the 17th playground Home Depot and KaBOOM! have helped build this season in conjunction with the NFL.
"It gives you a sense of happiness in your heart to do something for others," Carey said.
