The Dolphins are flying high into their bye week with some pep in their step after Sunday's stunning 38-13 victory over the vaunted Patriots.

But they're not resting on their laurels. Coach Tony Sparano is only giving them the customary Tuesday off and then the weekend so they could work on fundamentals and improving special teams, which has been nearly as weak as last year's unit. On Sunday, they gave up 237 yards to Patriots kick returner Ellis Hobbs.

"We can really focus on specific problems that have occurred over the last couple of weeks. That's what we did today, a bunch of third-down stuff. ... We hit special teams really hard and in an efficient practice. The guys finished almost eight minutes ahead of schedule today. They practiced fast and did it with good tempo," Sparano said.

Quarterback Chad Pennington said the early bye week comes in handy so he could establish better timing with his receivers, which was solid Sunday. He hit 17 of 20, and sprayed the ball around to eight different receivers, including five to Ted Ginn Jr.

"It's important to us because we have so many moving parts, a lot of new players including myself so a week like this earlier rather than later can really benefit us if we use our time wisely," Pennington said. "For a young team (the win) was a confidence-builder. From a veteran's perspective, our goal should not to be satisfied and think that type of win happens week in and week out. That's a rare occurrence in this league and most of the games are won in the fourth quarter on two-minute drives and games are certainly won by whoever makes the least amount of mistakes so it's a confidence builder for us, especially for our team. ... To be able to do this going into our bye week was a big step for us. It was a big difference going into this bye week 1-2 instead of going in 0-3."

Sparano said they "created access" for the receivers to get open and off the line of scrimmage a little bit cleaner.
