--Quarterback Josh McCown may have far more experience than fellow Dolphins quarterbacks John Beck and rookie Chad Henne with his 31 career starts, but his decision-making away from the field has to be questioned after nearly having the index finger of his throwing hand cut off by a chainsaw a few weeks ago.

Fortunately for McCown he only needed six stitches to sew up the digit and will be ready to compete for the starting job with Beck and Henne when training camp opens on July 26. Henne referred to McCown as his, "mentor," recently.

The injury happened when McCown and his brother, Tampa Bay quarterback Luke McCown, were trying to clear brush and tree stumps surrounding the family's lakefront home in Jacksonville, Texas.

There's a Texas Chainsaw Massacre joke in here somewhere.

"We were clearing some brush and wanted to cut up some stumps and stack them," said Josh, who has thrown 35 touchdowns in his six NFL seasons to one for Beck and none for Henne. "I was holding down a little piece of a tree trunk and my little brother, Luke, had the chain saw. He hit a knob and the chain saw jumped."

McCown said he was initially alarmed by the amount of blood, but was relieved when the finger was intact and the emergency room doctor told him there was no damage to the tendon.

"I clenched my fist to make sure the tendon was working. I walked out of the emergency room and got a football out of the trunk and fired a few passes to Luke, and knew I could've played that day," McCown said.

McCown, who was signed to a two-year deal worth $6.25 million in the offseason, said he realized he was fortunate with the accident, and plans to refrain from operating chain saws until his playing days are over.

Ironically, the Dolphins first preseason game is against the Bucs on Aug. 9 and may match up the chainsaw siblings.

Unless, of course, one of them gets cut.
