Will he stay or will he go?

A coy Bill Parcells finally broke his media silence at the Senior Bowl on Jan. 20 when asked if he would utilize the escape clause in his contract that became relevant once H. Wayne Huizenga sold his majority interest in the Dolphins earlier that afternoon.

Huizenga completed the transfer that day in which real estate mogul Stephen Ross purchased 45 percent more of the franchise and stadium - giving him 95 percent - in a deal worth an estimated $1.1 billion.

Parcells has 30 days to decide whether to bail out on the Dolphins and collect the remainder of his contract of about $12 million without working another day for Miami.

Parcells said he was leaning in the direction of staying but, "never say never," was his wise-guy response. He is either leveraging for more money or for adding another year to his escape clause so he could determine whether Ross' ownership skills are compatible to his monarch-like control of all football matters.

Ross said that there was nothing to re-negotiate, "at this point," and that Parcells wasn't going anywhere.

"He's the greatest football mind in America. I'm very happy to have him, needless to say," Ross said. "Everyone's expressed all the concerns, is he leaving or isn't he? ... He's staying and I'm fortunate to have him and I think Miami is fortunate to have him."

Parcells' rare presence at the Senior Bowl in Mobile portends well for his staying and completing the task at hand which is to continue the transformation of a moribund franchise back to the prominence it once had. Parcells and coach Tony Sparano just orchestrated one of the NFL's greatest single-season turnarounds in history in taking over a 1-15 team and leading it to 11-5 and an AFC East title.

Parcells also played a role in the signing of CFL star defensive end Cameron Wake. Wake, a fledgling version of a Lawrence Taylor-type pass-rushing linebacker, had 39 sacks the past two seasons for the British Columbia Lions and fits the Dolphins' 3-4 scheme.

Wake, a two-time CFL Defensive Player of the Year who was undrafted out of Penn State in 2005, will serve as an unofficial protege to Joey Porter, who earned his fourth Pro Bowl berth this season in a resurgent campaign in which he notched a career-high 17.5 sacks.

General manager Jeff Ireland also played both sides of the fence when asked if he'd be shocked if Parcells took the buyout and bolted prematurely due to the ownership change.

"I'd be shocked," Ireland said. "Obviously that would be something that we would not like to see happen. But anything can happen in this business. It's a business. This time of the year it's certainly a business, and I wouldn't be shocked at anything."
