Miami Dolphins Notes, Quotes 2009-03-17
--QB John Beck understands he's No. 3 behind Chad Pennington and Chad Henne, but he's only focusing on improving himself for his next opportunity so he could follow the path of longtime backup QB Matt Cassel. "In this game when you get an opportunity you have to make the most of it and that's what Matt Cassel did," Beck said. "He made the most of his opportunity, so for me, I'm working for whenever my next opportunity is. When that might happen I don't know, but one thing I want to do is I want to be ready for it."

-- New Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross is following his predecessor's philosophy of giving vice president of football operations Bill Parcells carte blanche on any football-related matters with no constraints on spending.

"A lot of owners are tightening their belts, but I would say that Bill has a free hand," Ross said. "I told Bill to do whatever it takes to make the Miami Dolphins win on the football field. That's the extent of it."

--Georgia Tech senior defensive end Michael Johnson said recently that he'd like to play for the Dolphins, and they have shown an interest in him.

--LG Justin Smiley, who is recovering from shoulder, ankle and leg surgeries, was deeply saddened by the tragic drowning deaths of linebacker Marquis Cooper and defensive end Corey Smith, his friends. Smiley trained with Cooper in Arizona before the 2004 draft, and he played with Smith on the 49ers in 2004 and 2005. "It's like a nightmare," Smiley said. "To think what those guys must've gone through out there 24 hours a day floating around. It's hard to fathom. Everyone should say a prayer and exercise caution. I'm a boater myself and love to go out and fish. I think this wakes me up. Sometimes you think because you play in the NFL we're invincible, and that's not the case."

--Former Dolphins receiver Nat Moore was happy that the Dolphins didn't go after controversial receiver Terrell Owens, despite the absence of an experienced star on a receiving corps that includes Ted Ginn Jr., Greg Camarillo, Davone Bess and Brandon London. "It's all about chemistry," Moore said. "Look at the Cowboys. What did they win? They've got marquee receivers all over the place. Look at Cincinnati. ... If you don't have chemistry, you don't win."

--WR Brandon London had three catches last season for 30 yards, but the Dolphins are high on his potential. This offseason he strutted his moves at a fashion show on a BET show called Ripping the Runway. He was flashing his Giants Super Bowl ring from 2007 when he was stashed on their practice squad.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think Ginn is an unpolished receiver and only going to get better. ... If the guy's not dropping the ball and is learning to run routes where he's getting open with the opportunities he's getting, why replace him? -- Former Dolphins receiver Nat Moore sticking up for beleaguered Dolphins WR Ted Ginn Jr.
