Miami Dolphins Notes, Quotes 2009-03-20
--The Dolphins hired former pro tennis CEO and NFL executive Arlen Kantarian as a part-time advisor regarding business and commercial interests, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Kantarian helped institute the popular electronic challenge replay systems at tennis tournaments and helped the U.S. Open nearly double its revenue while establishing annual attendance records. He will advise owner Stephen M. Ross on ways to better utilize Dolphin Stadium by booking events such as concerts all year round. Naming rights for the stadium will also be investigated.

--The Dolphins brought in free-agent cornerback DeMarcus Faggins for a visit this week but no deal was reached. Faggins spent the past seven seasons with the Texans, where he contributed 216 tackles (187 solo) and recorded five interceptions.

--Dolphins defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni visited the University of Cincinnati this week to put defensive end Connor Barwin through a private workout. The 6-3, 255-pound Barwin, who had 11 sacks his senior season, would most likely be converted to an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. He also played tight end as a junior and had 31 catches for 399 yards with two touchdowns.

"It's rare to find a guy who can rush the passer and drop back into coverage and cover a tight end," Barwin said. "It doesn't hurt that I was a tight end. If someone put a gun to my head and forced me to choose I'd have to give the nod to defense because you have a chance to create your own plays on that side of the ball every snap. You don't have to wait for someone to throw it to you."

--RG Donald Thomas, the surprising rookie sixth-round pick out of Connecticut who sustained a season-ending foot injury in the season opener, told WQAM-560 that he is completely healed and ready to resume all football-related duties. "I'm all set and cleared to play. I've been working out pretty regularly now," Thomas said. "I'm ready to go and get back to business."

--The Dolphins didn't send vice president of football operations Bill Parcells, coach Tony Sparano or GM Jeff Ireland to Gainesville to attend Pro Day, but Gator receivers Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy, as well as tight end Cornelius Ingram all said that they have individual workouts scheduled with the Dolphins before the draft next month.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You have to perform. You got guys coming into the league that's usually similar in talent. It's about who wants it the most. I always say you run your fastest when you got somebody chasing you." -- LG Justin Smiley on the Dolphins regime constantly bringing in offensive linemen to create competition and depth.
