Miami Dolphins Notes, Quotes 2009-03-27
--TE Anthony Fasano did an ESPN national radio spot Tuesday night in Los Angeles where he was attending a charity golf tournament hosted by Playboy, and was asked what he did with all his money. "The Dolphins don't even have direct deposit. I go to my bank every two weeks and make a deposit. There are like 2-3 teams in the league that doesn't have it," Fasano joked.

--The Dolphins weren't among the 16 teams awarded compensatory draft picks this year.

--Coach Tony Sparano said if he didn't find an offensive coordinator with the experience of a Dan Henning he would've called the plays last year. "If I found somebody that I was really comfortable with that had the experience running the offense, they would run the offense and I would be the head coach and make sure that I was able to touch both sides of the ball, the special teams, have my hand involved in all that and bring this kind of thing together a little bit more," said Sparano.

--QB John Beck won't be doing much more than holding a clipboard this year unless he is traded for a draft pick because Sparano said that when Chad Pennington isn't throwing, Chad Henne will be.

"It will be hard to get him work," Sparano said. "But there's only three quarterbacks right now, that's all we're carrying. Some teams carry more than that, but from our end that's what we carry. With John, he knows his job first and foremost is to compete with Henne.

"He needs to compete with Henne and he'll get some reps in practice, he'll get some reps in the preseason games as well. ... He was in the middle of a quarterback deal. Enter Pennington and Henne, really, so it wasn't that easy for him. But at the end of the day he was the guy obviously that we kept. He's a young quarterback, only two years in the league, and he'll continue to get better and better."

--New Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross couldn't make the cross-country trip to Dana Point, Calif., for the owner's meetings because of an illness.

--QB Chad Pennington was more concerned with passing shots than passes this week when he played tennis with ninth-ranked Nadia Petrova at the Sony Ericsson Open. "I haven't played tennis in 10 years since messing around with my buddies in college (Marshall)," Pennington said.

"I wanted (Sparano) to see I'm in shape and not just sitting around," Pennington said, laughing.

Pennington said he's not concerned about a contract extension or about competition with Henne.

"It's not news. Coach Sparano, Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland have been up front since day one about my future. My future is now."

--Pennington has been working with his longtime personal trainer, Charles Petrone, at a local high school since early February. They recruited former NFL and Dolphins receiver David Boston, who is hoping to mount a comeback, as well as Dolphins tight end David Martin. Boston has landed a tryout with the Patriots.

--Former NFL WR Keyshawn Johnson, who made Pro Bowls under Bill Parcells, told the Palm Beach Post that Dolphins WR Ted Ginn is a good No. 2. "He had a good year. But he's a guy that is not your elite receiver," Johnson said. "He's a good No. 2. ... Who's he going to block? The problem you have with him is he can run like a deer and he can play like a deer - scared."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "That's the part of playing quarterback like you know what you're doing but inside you have no idea." -- QB Chad Pennington, pretending to grunt while having an informal hit with tennis star Nadia Petrova at the Sony Ericsson Open.
