Miami Dolphins Notes, Quotes 2009-05-15
--Jason Taylor isn't the only player that vice president of football operations Bill Parcells and general manager Jeff Ireland are giving a second chance. The Dolphins also signed oft-troubled lineman J.D. Quinn last week.

Although Taylor's issues had more to do with his age than any character flaws -- the kind that got Quinn kicked out of Oklahoma and kept out of the NFL -- the Dolphins' brass is probably attributing Quinn's off-field transgressions to immaturity and poor decision-making.

Quinn and then Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar were thrown out of Oklahoma in August 2006 for accepting thousands of dollars for work they didn't perform at a Norman, Okla., car dealership.

The 6-3, 300-pound guard/center, who also had a DUI on his record, transferred to the University of Montana, but encountered troubles there with two more drunk-driving related charges.

"J.D. is a changed man the past 12 months," Quinn's agent Cameron Foster said. "He has seen his stock value fall and realized that he's his own worst enemy. He has gone to AA meetings and realized his problem and been humbled."

--OLBs Jason Taylor (120.5) and Joey Porter (83) have a combined 203.5 career sacks, by far the most of any NFL pass-rushing teammates. Dallas' DeMarcus Ware (53.5) and Greg Ellis (77) are second with 130.5 sacks.

"I just texted him earlier. We're jacked up about it and he will add something great to this defense that we already got rolling," LB Channing Crowder said of Taylor's re-signing.

--With the addition of J.D. Quinn and Jason Taylor, the Dolphins have 75 players under contract, and that doesn't include the nine rookies drafted, who have not signed contracts. NFL teams can only take 80 players to training camp, which opens in late July.

--Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross has joined forces with legendary singer Jimmy Buffett, who held a semiprivate three-song concert to selected guests (about 500) and members of the media in which they renamed Dolphin Stadium, "Land Shark Stadium," after a beer in which Buffett and Anheuser-Busch are partners. It's a one-season arrangement and it doesn't include the Pro Bowl or Super Bowl.

"We give the fans an experience no other NFL city will be able to do. It's something I've always dreamt about -- seeing how we could merge Jimmy Buffett and the Dolphins," Ross said of bringing Margaritaville-themed areas at the stadium.

--The times and dates of all four Dolphins preseason games were confirmed this week: Home games on Aug. 17 against Jacksonville and Aug. 22 against Carolina. Both games will start at 7:30 p.m. The two final exhibitions games are Aug. 27 at Tampa Bay and Sept. 3 at New Orleans. Both road games kick off at 8 p.m. The Dolphins play all four opponents in the regular season as well.

QUOTE OF NOTE: "If they're getting anything near the Jason Taylor of 2007, you've got a drink with an umbrella in one hand and a great-looking girl in the other." -- Randy Cross, former NFL offensive lineman and current sports-talk host on Sirius Radio NFL Network.
