Miami Dolphins Notes, Quotes 2008-09-27
--RB Ronnie Brown was named AFC Player of the Week for his spectacular day against the Patriots in which he accounted for all five touchdowns -- four on the ground and one via air. It's the first time he's won the award. "It's rewarding for myself; it's big coming off the injury," Brown said. "I put in all the work in the offseason, coming to therapy every day. I look at it as a payoff."

--OLB Joey Porter is up for NFL Defensive Player of the Week after notching three sacks and a forced fumble against the Patriots. He has four sacks and is tied for second most in the NFL. "I don't have no excuse if I don't put up 10 or better sacks this year. I said I would and if I don't do that then you could write he didn't perform to the level he thought he could play. I told you I'd be a night and day player from last year to this year." -- Porter, on the difference of playing in a 3-4 instead of out of position in a 4-3 like he played last year.

--Chad Pennington's passer rating Sunday was 113.8, the best rating by a Dolphins QB since Gus Frerotte posted a 128.8 against the Chargers in a 23-21 win on Dec. 11, 2005. "I thought he made a bunch of nice plays out there with his location, which gave us the opportunity to run after the catch and that's something we in this room talked about last week a little bit," coach Tony Sparano said about Pennington's performance.

--RB Ronnie Brown is now 1-for-2 as a passer, and Pennington was fine with letting Brown throw the ball. "I'm comfortable with whatever works for us," Pennington said. "It's something that's a good design for us and something we want to use to our advantage. I think the reason it worked was because our base offense was successful."

--The Dolphins secondary went from ranked 30th to 25th by holding the Patriots to 137 passing yards. "Listen to the atmosphere in here. Sunday night may have been the best I've ever felt in seven years of football. I felt great. Just imagine holding that feeling for a period of time. I thought the guys got that hunger again." -- CB Andre' Goodman, on the mood swing in the Dolphins locker room this week after their shocking win over the Patriots.

--The Dolphins have just one turnover in their first three games, the fewest they've ever had at this point.

The Dolphins have nine sacks after three games. Last year they needed seven games before notching nine sacks.

Said Sparano, "Obviously, what Joey (Porter) did the other night and Joey has really been doing that for the first couple weeks. He had a sack in the first game and then was around the quarterback a couple times there. This week I thought he provided a lot of pressure. They were trying to single-block him out there and I think he did a nice job that way. That happens when you get good push in the middle too, and you're getting pressure that way. I thought a couple guys really did a nice job this week, and there were several of them that did, but I thought (Kendall) Langford and (Phillip) Merling really provided a lot of pass rush this week. They were kind of pain in the necks and they were up in the backfield playing on that side of the line of scrimmage in the pass rush. When you can get some of those things happening, all of a sudden and you're getting two bodies on one guy, somewhere or another somebody has to win an individual matchup and I think that's happening a little bit."

BY THE NUMBERS: 7 -- Touchdowns in 10 trips inside the opponents' red zone or 20-yard line this season, a 70 percent rate, which is third best in the AFC and fourth best in the NFL.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think it happened to me one time in Dallas, maybe, we had a 230-something-yard rushing game or somewhere around there, and some of my players did it to me one time there. Before that, I was at the University of New Haven. I believe we had just beaten California-Davis in the Yale Bowl, in the game that put us into the National Championship; the semi-final game. I think that was the last time, so certainly I wasn't accustomed to the feel of it. ... At the time it was great; you could have done anything to me at that point. It was just nice knowing that it came from the players." -- Coach Tony Sparano, on his third career Gatorade shower after his first NFL win Sunday.
