Miami Dolphins Notes, Quotes 2008-10-28
--The Dolphins are now 1-for-32 on third downs of 7 yards or longer, so in order to counter that, head coach Tony Sparano and offensive coordinator Dan Henning had QB Chad Pennington throw on first down 16 times. He completed 14 passes for 244 yards.

"What we do know is one of the things we've been very efficient at right now is we're one of the top teams in the league on first-and-10 offense, whether we're throwing it or running it," Sparano said. "That being said, we weren't very good on third down, so we knew we could have success -- or we were hoping we could have some success -- so throwing it sometimes keeps you out of those third-down situations.

"It was all part of being aggressive. That was a defense who can dictate the tempo of the game, and we didn't want that."

The Dolphins were only 3-for-11 on third downs.

--QB Chad Pennington threw for 314 yards, the sixth 300-yard passing game of his career and his first since Dec. 17, 2006, when he tossed for a career-high 339 yards in the Jets' 26-13 win at Minnesota. When he has thrown for 300 or more yards in a game, his teams are 5-1.

"Whatever it takes to win, that's my motto," Pennington said. "If it means that I need to make 10 good run checks and get us into 10 good running plays, that's what I'm up for. If it means that I've got to step up back in there and move around and make some plays, that's part of being a quarterback. It's not about touchdowns and stats, it's about getting your team in the end zone and winning the football game."

--LB Joey Porter's fumble recovery was his first since Sept. 18, 2005, at Houston, when he recovered a David Carr fumble as a member of the Steelers. With two sacks Sunday, Porter has 10.5 for the season, tying a career high set in 2000 and 2005. Porter's sack total after seven games is the second most by a Dolphin at this point of a season, trailing only Trace Armstrong's total of 11 in 2000.

"If you really watch football and know football, you would understand it. But you're just pen-pushers. All y'all see is 'Joey, 5 1/2. That's not good enough,'" Porter said to reporters, referring to his sack total last season when he played out of position. "I told you, give me a 3-4 defense and 10 sacks, that's a given. That's what you're supposed to do in a 3-4 defense if you're a good outside linebacker. ... It's not even a big deal."
