Miami Dolphins Notes, Quotes 2008-10-30
--The Dolphins and Broncos haven't met since the 2005 season opener, and Miami hasn't won in Denver since Oct. 13, 2002 when Olindo Mare kicked a 53-yard field goal with six seconds left to give the Dolphins a 24-22 win.

--Common opponent: The Broncos are coming off a 41-7 loss to the Patriots in Foxboro. The Dolphins beat the Patriots in Foxboro 38-13 on Sept. 21.

--QB Chad Pennington was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week Wednesday. It's the fifth time he's won the award but first since the 2006 season opener. Pennington was 22 of 30 for a season-high 314 yards with one TD pass and no picks for a 117.9 rating, the fourth time in the past five games he's topped 100. "It means a lot when you win. It's something I think is an honor and you're happy about it, but you're not satisfied. You want to continue to do things to help your team win and that's the most important thing. When your team is winning and doing good things, those awards and accolades normally come. I think it's a credit to us as a team and how we played well as a team and how everyone has bought into what we're trying to do." -- Pennington on the award.

--DT Dewayne Robertson, a longtime Jet and former teammate of Chad Pennington, is 7-2 against the Dolphins, including seven straight, but has just 26 career tackles and .05 sack against them.

--Broncos coach Mike Shanahan admitted Wednesday that the high altitude is a big reason why the Broncos own the best home record in the NFL over the last 30 years. "We've got the best record I think at home over the last 30 years and I don't think it's because we've been the best football team. I do think there's an advantage from an altitude standpoint. Players that have played here over the years feel that way as well."

--OLB Joey Porter, who went to school at Colorado, is concerned about the altitude. "The altitude is really big. I've trained there a lot. I'll go back to California for a week and come back and it feels like it's ripping a hole in your chest. It's definitely going to take some extra conditioning to where you go up in this thin air, you're going to feel the difference."

--The Broncos are 10-3 after the bye week, including five straight wins, and the Dolphins are 9-15 against teams coming off a bye week. "Their bye week obviously fell at a better opportunity maybe then ours did in that they had a larger body of work to look at right now so that they can see maybe what they need to improve on one way or the other. So, does it help? Yeah, if you use it the right way. I thought we used it the right way. As far as what they've done, that's their business." -- Dolphins coach Tony Sparano, on whether the bye week can be an advantage.

--QB Chad Pennington has faced the Broncos once in his career on Dec. 8, 2002 at the Meadowlands when he led the Jets to a 19-13 victory as he completed 19 of 30 for 244 yards and a touchdown and no picks. Pennington is averaging 8.47 yards per attempt, second best in the NFL. The great Dan Marino only topped that in one of his 17 seasons, in the magical 1984 season when he threw 48 TD passes. "I think anytime you're able to get a guy like Chad, him to a program your first year, you feel very lucky as a head coach. I don't care if it's Drew Brees in New Orleans or Chad in Miami. To have a guy with that type of experience, a winner, a guy that has done it week in, week out, a definite team leader, you feel like you stole something. I'm sure Miami feels that way." -- Denver coach Mike Shanahan, on Pennington.

--OLB Joey Porter, who leads the NFL with 10.5 sacks, has nine tackles in two games against Denver. "I've gone against Joey enough being right down the road at UNC (Northern Colorado) and going against Pittsburgh for all of those years. He's a guy that is relentless in his approach to the game. He's going to make plays. It's one of the reasons he's leading the NFL in sacks, he's just a relentless player that you want on your team." -- Broncos coach Mike Shanahan on Porter.

--If the Dolphins gain 350 or more yards in total offense for the sixth straight game, it would be the first time since gaining that many yards in seven straight games during the 1986 season.

--WR Ted Ginn is coming off the best game of his two-year career with seven catches for 175 yards. "What Ted Ginn has done since the day that we got here is slowly, surely, the guy has gotten better and better. He's gone out there and worked his tail off every practice. So, we go out there today and that's exactly what I expected to see and that's what he did. ... He gets upset when he doesn't do something right. He's eager to know what he needs to do to get it right and I think that's a good sign. I think when they start coming up with all the answers, that's where you've got a problem." Coach Tony Sparano, on Ginn not getting a big head.

BY THE NUMBERS: 7 -- The Dolphins are plus-7 in turnovers, tied for the best in the NFL.

26 -- Last week the Dolphins scored a touchdown on their opening series, marking the first time they did that in 26 games.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "How ever many they keep leaving out there. I can't put a number on it. It's one of those situations where I could honestly say I never started off like that but if we keep putting guys in situations where it's third-and-long I know I can go get the quarterback. Then we'll just figure out what happens at the end." -- Dolphins OLB Joey Porter, on his chase of Michael Strahan's all-time sack record.
