Miami Dolphins: Rookie minicamp Day 1 (quick hits)
May 1, 2009 (Sun Sentinel delivered by Newstex ) --

Some quick hits before I turn my attention to a column, and then the Heat game.

For more detail about specific plays, go to Omar's blog. He's posting as we speak.

-- Pat White wears gloves on both hands. Tony Sparano said that he asked White about it yesterday, and White told him that's how he feels comfortable, since that's what he did at West Virginia. Sparano said he's fine with it, and it might actually help in cold-weather games, when White will be used to wearing the gloves.

-- White was hit-or-miss, but he did hit on one perfect bomb down the left side to Anthony Armstrong, who beat Sean Smith. White acknowledged that he was thinking a lot. Sparano said "no" and then moved to the next question when asked if White would work at anything other than quarterback. The kid's head will be swimming enough, learning just that position.

-- Sean Smith has a "greatness" tattoo on his right forearm. It's clear already that he and Vontae Davis are outgoing personalities, and free talkers, at least until this regime beats that out of them. Davis has a mohawk, closely cropped.

-- Cameron Wake was here. My apologies for that. Honest mistake, or miscommunication, or something.?A Dolphins public relations official told us that he wouldn't be here, because he had been in Giants camp. But he hasn't accrued a year toward his pension. He spent much of Friday dropping into coverage, which he last did during the middle of his last CFL season. I asked if he was a late bloomer or if NFL teams had just underestimated him. "A little of both," he said. "I didn't play (Football) until I was 17, 18 years old."

-- When asked about Jason Taylor, Sparano addressed it directly, but also spoke about how excited he was?(and is) to see Wake, Tearrius George and Erik Walden as pass-rushers. Again, I get the sense the Dolphins and Taylor are?on different timetables. He wants?to move quickly.?They are taking their time.

-- Sparano acknowledged that the Dolphins had talked about the "third quarterback" dilemma before the draft. I blogged on this on draft day.?Sparano said that White would be the second quarterback in that scenario, but that the situation would be fluid, and needed to be further considered. The question is whether to activate Chad Henne as the third guy, or to make him the "third quarterback." There are advantages and disadvantages to both. If Henne is inactive, and he enters before the fourth quarter, then Chad Pennington and White wouldn't be allowed to play anymore. If Henne is active, that means that the Dolphins would need to deactive another player, to get to eight. And that guy might be valuable on special teams.

-- The St. Pete Times passed this along to me. He spoke to Bucs defensive coordinator Jim Bates about Jason Taylor. "Jason is a great Football player," Bates said. "Last year, he fell off a little bit but he's a young 34. Just a good, solid professional athlete. There's been discussion. I don't know where we're going with it. You can talk to Mark (Dominik) and everybody on it."
