Miami Dolphins Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-06
Dolphins vice president of football operations Bill Parcells is continuing his blueprint of building a team inside-out. That explains the free-agent signings of center/guards Joe Berger and Jake Grove, as well as locking up their own right tackle Vernon Carey.

He took care of the, "out" part by re-signing late-bloomer strong safety Yeremiah Bell and adding Raiders versatile safety Gibril Wilson, an interception magnet. Wilson has 13 picks in five years and had 129 tackles for the dysfunctional Raiders last season. He also has a Super Bowl ring from his Giants days where he played with fellow Dolphins' LB Reggie Torbor and WR Brandon London.

Earlier this preseason, GM Jeff Ireland raided the CFL for another hybrid 3-4 pass-rushing outside linebacker in Cameron Wake, a nice successor/complement for Joey Porter.

Their next glaring need is at cornerback because there's no way they enter the season with Jason Allen, Nate Jones or Joey Thomas competing for the starting job opposite Will Allen. They brought in Cardinals free-agent cornerback Eric Green for a workout this week and certainly will use one of their four first-day draft picks on a cornerback and receiver.

1. Cornerback: With the loss of starting CB Andre' Goodman to the Broncos, the Dolphins don't dare head into the season with Jason Allen, Joey Thomas and Nate Jones as his potential replacement, so look for them to sign a free agent and then use one of their first three picks on a corner. The Dolphins brought in Cardinals free-agent CB Eric Green for a workout. Connecticut's Darius Butler would be a nice fit in Miami if available when it's their time to pick at No. 25.

2. Defensive tackle: Incumbent starter Jason Ferguson will be 34 and he's most likely playing his last season in Miami, so it's imperative the Dolphins draft a nose tackle, someone like BC's Ron Brace, to groom as Ferguson's replacement in the 3-4. The jury is still out on third-year NT Paul Soliai, who was suspended twice last season for violating team rules.

3. Wide Receiver: Bill Parcells hates drafting receivers in the first round, but he might make an exception for Kenny Britt or Hakeem Nicks. Ted Ginn Jr., Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess are decent receivers, but none needs double coverage and none could compare to any of the frontline receivers on either Super Bowl squad (Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Santonio Holmes, Hines Ward).

MEDICAL WATCH: LG Justin Smiley needed surgeries to mend ankle and shoulder so he may take the longest to heal. He is hopeful of being OK by training camp. Ditto for WR Greg Camarillo, who underwent major knee surgery in late November. RG Donald Thomas will be ready for spring mini-camps after undergoing foot surgery last September.

--C Al Johnson, a midseason pickup who was nearly 100 percent recovered from multi-knee surgeries, is a Tony Sparano favorite for his high football IQ. His flexibility to play guard as well is also a boon and it would be shocking to not see the Dolphins retain him for what should be a bargain-basement price.

--WR Tab Perry, who spent last year on IR with a torn Achilles, will most likely be re-signed for the minimum.

--LB Derek Smith, a veteran late-season pickup, won't be a priority due to his age (33).

--TE Aaron Halterman (not tendered as ERFA).

--LB Quentin Moses.

--RG Ike Ndukwe.
