Dolphins vice president of football operations Bill Parcells is continuing his blueprint of building a team inside-out. That explains the free-agent signings of center/guards Joe Berger and Jake Grove, as well as locking up their own right tackle Vernon Carey.

He took care of the, "out" part by re-signing late-bloomer strong safety Yeremiah Bell and adding Raiders versatile safety Gibril Wilson, an interception magnet. Wilson has 13 picks in five years and had 129 tackles for the dysfunctional Raiders last season. He also has a Super Bowl ring from his Giants days where he played with fellow Dolphins' LB Reggie Torbor and WR Brandon London.

Earlier this preseason, GM Jeff Ireland raided the CFL for another hybrid 3-4 pass-rushing outside linebacker in Cameron Wake, a nice successor/complement for Joey Porter.

Even with Wake, Parcells is always on the lookout for the next Lawrence Taylor, an outside linebacker who could wreak havoc in the backfield by pressuring quarterbacks, so expect Ireland to pull the trigger on one of the many 3-4 type linebackers in the draft such as Virginia's Clint Sintim and USC's Clay Matthews.

1. Wide Receiver: Vice president of football operations Bill Parcells hates drafting receivers in the first round, but he might make an exception for Kenny Britt or Hakeem Nicks. Miami's receiving corps of Ted Ginn Jr., Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess caught a combined five touchdown passes last year. They rarely stretch the field.

2. Defensive tackle: Incumbent starter Jason Ferguson will be 34, and he's most likely playing his last season in Miami, so it's imperative the Dolphins draft a nose tackle, someone like Boston College's Ron Brace, to groom as Ferguson's replacement in the 3-4. The jury is still out on third-year NT Paul Soliai, whom the Dolphins suspended twice last season for violating team rules.

3. Cornerback: Although the Dolphins signed Cardinals free-agent CB Eric Green, they shouldn't rest on their laurels. He is coming off an injury-plagued season in which he was replaced by a rookie during Arizona's Super Bowl run, and he has just two career picks in four seasons. The loss of veteran CB Andre' Goodman to Denver will be felt on and off the field, and returning starter Will Allen is in the final year of his contract. UConn's Darius Butler would be a nice fit in Miami. They also brought in Texans free agent CB DeMarcus Faggins for a visit.

MEDICAL WATCH: RG Donald Thomas, who won the starting job in training camp but sustained a season-ending foot injury in the season opener, said recently that he is completely cleared to resume full activities.
