SANCHEZ SET FOR 1ST JET FLIGHT

SANCHEZ SET FOR 1ST JET FLIGHT
The education of a quarterback begins today in Florham Park.

Mark Sanchez, the Jets' big prize from last week's NFL Draft, will step on the practice field as a member of the Jets for the first time as the team's three-day rookie minicamp begins.

The Jets will get to see his prized right arm that caused them to trade up to get him last week and the process to make him an NFL quarterback will begin.

This is unfamiliar territory for the Jets franchise. Not since Joe Namath in 1965 has a rookie quarterback had expectations placed upon him like Sanchez. The team has drafted other quarterbacks since then but they've always had an established veteran in front of them. Richard Todd had Namath, Ken O'Brien had Todd, Browning Nagle had O'Brien, Chad Pennington had Vinny Testaverde and Kellen Clemens had Pennington.

But this is a different situation that Sanchez is walking into. All eyes are on him. He will be competing with Clemens, who has been with the team for four seasons but has barely played.

Sanchez also must deal with the raised expectations caused by the success of Matt Ryan in Atlanta and Joe Flacco in Baltimore last year. Those rookies both led their teams to the playoffs.

"If that is the case here and I am starting right away, obviously those are some serious goals - the playoffs, our division, things like that," Sanchez said last Sunday. "It is going to start from day one and there is a lot of work ahead. This isn't an endpoint. Getting here is about winning regular season games, and playoffs and championships."

The likelihood is Sanchez will start the season on the sideline. The Jets have never had a rookie quarterback start a season. Even Namath waited until the third game in 1965 before his first start. In fact, the Jets have not started a rookie QB at any point in a non-strike season since Nov. 27, 1977, when Matt Robinson started against Pittsburgh at Shea Stadium in place of an injured Todd and threw three interceptions. David Norrie, a replacement player, started two games in 1987.
